If the arrow pointed the wrong way, please say whether you were moving or standing still, whether the line under the distance said “By compass” or “By direction of travel”, and roughly how far from the place you were. That is almost always enough to reproduce it.

Frequently asked questions

Does it give me directions? No. It points in a straight line to the place, as the crow flies, and tells you how far that is. On a trail the way back is rarely straight. Homeward tells you which way it is, not how to get there.

Why does it say “By compass” sometimes? While you’re moving, the arrow follows your direction of travel from GPS. A phone on the handlebars or a watch on your wrist doesn’t always face the way the bike goes. When you stop, it switches to the compass, which follows the way the phone or watch itself is facing.

Why can’t I set a place where I’m standing? The GPS fix has to be good to about 50 metres first, or the place would land across the road. Under heavy trees or between buildings, give it a moment in the open.

Does it need my phone to work on the watch? No. The watch has its own GPS and compass, and keeps pointing with the phone left at home. The place it points to comes from the phone when they’re together, and either one can set a new one.

Does it work without a signal? Yes. Pointing needs only GPS, which works without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. Only picking a place on the map needs the map to load.

Where is my data kept? On your iPhone and Apple Watch, and nowhere else. See the privacy policy.
