If the pip count from a photo looks wrong, please say which set you play with and roughly how the photo was taken. That is usually enough to reproduce it.
Frequently asked questions
How is Mexican Train scored? There is one round per double, starting from the highest and working down to 0|0. At the end of a round, each player scores the pips left in their hand — going out scores 0. The lowest total after the last round wins.
Which sets does it support? Double nine, double twelve and double fifteen. The set decides how many rounds a full game has: a double-twelve game has 13.
Can we play a shorter game? Yes. When you start a game, choose how many rounds — anything from one to the whole set. A shorter game counts down from the highest double the same way and stops early, so a three-round double-twelve game plays 12|12, 11|11 and 10|10.
How does counting from a photo work? Photograph the tiles left in your hand and Caboose counts the pips on your phone. The count is always yours to correct before it goes on the scorecard.
How do I get a good count? Lay the tiles flat on a dark surface and shoot from directly above, with every tile fully in the frame. A photo of the whole table at an angle is not something it tries to read.
Where does the photo go? Nowhere. It is counted in memory on your phone and never stored or sent — the app has no networking code of its own.
Can I play without the camera? Yes. Every score can be typed by hand, and if you turn camera access off in Settings the rest of the app works exactly the same.
Will I lose a game if I close the app? No. Every game is kept on your phone. The one on the table picks up where you left off, and starting a new one sets it aside in History rather than throwing it away.
Does it cost anything? No. Every feature is free, with no ads and no tracking. There is an optional tip in Settings for anyone who wants to support it; it unlocks nothing.
