The short version

Sundial does not collect, store, or share your personal data. There are no accounts, no analytics, and no trackers. There is no server, and nothing is ever sent to us, or to anyone else.

Your location

Sundial paces your counts against today’s sunrise and sunset, and to work those out it needs to know roughly where you are. iOS asks your permission the first time, and offers approximate location first: a sunrise is the same across the few kilometres approximate location blurs.

Sundial asks for one position when you open it, rounds it to about a kilometre (two decimal places of latitude and longitude), and saves that one rounded spot on your iPhone so the widget, which can’t ask for a location itself, can draw the same sun. It keeps only the latest spot, never a history of where you have been, and it never leaves your iPhone. The sunrise and sunset are worked out on the device; no service is asked.

You don’t have to share your location at all. You can pick a time zone instead — on the first screen, before Sundial ever asks, or later in Settings. Sundial then works out the sun for the city that time zone is named after, and saves only the time zone’s name (such as America/Los_Angeles) with that city’s published coordinates. No location is asked for.

You can turn location off for Sundial at any time in Settings. Your counts and goals still work without it; only the pace against the sun needs a location or a time zone.

Your counters

Your counters, each with its name, daily goal, step, the count for each day, and the day each goal was set, are kept in one file on your iPhone, shared between the app and its widget. The app also keeps your appearance choice. Past days are kept, so nothing you counted is lost at midnight and each counter’s history can be shown.

This data is included in your device backup like any app’s data, and it is deleted when you delete the app. You can delete any counter, with its counts, from the app at any time.

Purchases

The optional tip in Settings is processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never receive your payment information. Tips support development and unlock nothing. Every feature of the app is free, and there are no subscriptions and no ads.

Analytics and tracking

Sundial contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking software, and no third-party SDKs that collect data. We do not use the Advertising Identifier (IDFA) and we do not track you across apps or websites. The app’s privacy manifest declares no collected data types and no tracking domains.

Children

Sundial collects no data from anyone. It counts push-ups.
