If a count looks wrong, please say whether you added it from the app or the widget, and roughly when. If the pace looks wrong, the sunrise and sunset times under the sky are usually enough to tell why.

Frequently asked questions

What does “keeping pace with the sun” mean? By the time a third of the daylight has gone, a third of your goal should be done. Sundial compares how far the sun has come across the sky with how far your count has come towards the goal. Within one set of the pace, you’re keeping pace.

How do I count from the Home Screen? Add the Sundial widget, then press and hold it and choose Edit Widget to pick which counter it shows. Its + and − add or take away one set. Add one widget per counter.

When does the count reset? At midnight, in your iPhone’s time zone. Nothing is deleted: yesterday’s count is kept, and today simply starts at zero.

Why does it need my location? Only to know when the sun rises and sets where you are, and an approximate location is enough. You don’t have to share one: choose a time zone instead, on the first screen or in Settings, and Sundial uses the city that time zone is named after. That’s approximate — across a wide time zone the sun can be most of an hour off — so your own location is closer. With neither, your counts and goals still work; there’s just no pace.

How are streaks counted? Tap a counter’s name to see its history. A streak is the days in a row you reached that day’s goal. Today joins the streak once you reach its goal, and doesn’t break it before then. Each day is judged against the goal it had at the time, so changing a goal doesn’t rewrite past days.

What happens where the sun doesn’t set, or doesn’t rise? Under the midnight sun, the pace runs across the whole day, midnight to midnight. In the polar night there is no sunrise, so there’s no pace to keep.
